The first and the foremost task is to show your people the power of teamwork. You should be able enough to make your team clear about the benefits of working as a team. This could serve as an eye opener for the members, if you give them this idea. You should supervise the project or task which is measurable and quick. You should gather them all together, plan the steps, set two or three people to initiate the task and later include all the members into it. This act of yours will display them the power of working as a team. A large project can be handled wisely, if small groups of employees are handed over small tasks instead of doing the entire job alone.
After you have managed to make people agree for working as a team at your workplace, the next task comes to keep them all at a point. Focus is what every job desires. And being a manager you are required to maintain that. It happens in a team, that one part/member fall down, but the manager has to take care of it. One of the best solutions for this is to figure out, what is the reason behind falling? Why has the part/member been unable to complete its role? By proper observations and firm queries, you will easily find out the root cause. Sometimes there lies some training issues behind failures; this should be solved by the manger. In case its laziness, then proper warning should be issued, as this laziness may affect the whole team.
One last problem that a manger may face during management of a team is that people get locked into specific duties. Sometimes one member of the group is out for work the rest of the team falls apart. Most often you are not keeping one person for only one task. In such cases you should train your members for various steps of the projects so that you may interchange the manpower at the time of need. This will enable you to fit different people in diverse activities. This thing will also save time and work will be done quickly.
There are not any hard and fast rules for teamwork. People usually listen to their leads, and are ready to anything that makes their jobs easier and simple to carry out.
